Amoy YM Ong 王玉梅
With experiences in multi-migrations, my last stop prior to Hong Kong was Canada where I lived for 30+ years and where I worked in the mental health, hospital, long-term care, and community settings as a clinician, trainer, community organizer, and researcher. I taught at Canada ’s York University (Identity and Diversity; Equity; Women) for a number of years before I moved to Hong Kong in 2008 and taught at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Social Work; Counselling and Psychology), and the University of Hong Kong (supervising Master in Counselling students’ practicum).
I am intercultural competent and fluent in both Cantonese and English.
Areas of expertise:
I specialize in trauma work, mental health, diversity and intercultural relationship (including relocation/ migration, adjustment and resettlement), identity and diversity, loss and bereavement, women, aging, LGBTQI, and sexual health. My latest focus area of interest lies in the intergenerational transmission of trauma where I have witnessed, in both my clinical practice and community work, the effects of transmission of traumas across generations. This process could be interrupted only when healing starts to take place, even by one family member whose healing journey will have systemic impact inter-generationally. I have found this to be the case cross-culturally as well.
Working with individuals and couples, I adopt Somatic Experiencing, Emotionally Focused Therapy and Spiritual Psychotherapy. Eclectically, I also integrate Positive Psychological Intervention, Existential Psychotherapy, Mindfulness, Feminist Therapy, Past Life Regression and Sex Therapy.
